David Murphy is among the most respected structural engineers in San Francisco. Nearing his 40th year in practice, his impressive resume includes nearly thirty years of forensic work. Mr. Murphy's ability to analyze building failures, due to either design, construction, maintenance and combinations thereof, has been honed with extensive design practice on hundreds of projects throughout the Country, primarily West Coast but also with projects in Hawaii, New York, Illinois, Florida and Pennsylvania.

Career Experience

David Murphy has been especially active in the post-earthquake evaluations and repairs of hundreds of building caused by California’s Whittier, Loma Prieta and Northridge earthquakes and Washington State’s Nisqually Earthquake.

Mr. Murphy is especially qualified to render opinions regarding buildings damaged by fire, impacts, adjacent construction activity and foundation and earth failures. He has authored approximately 1,000 reports and has appeared at dozens of appraisal arbitrations, depositions and trials on these matters.

His ability to solve tricky engineering problems is demonstrated in the retrofit of sensitive historic buildings such as The Old Federal Reserve, The Humboldt Bank Building, Cavallo Point in Sausalito, numerous buildings located in The Presidio of San Francisco, The Omni Hotel in the Financial District of San Francisco, The San Francisco Mart ( a one-million square foot beaux arts style building in the mid-Market area) as well as being a preferred structural engineer for the unique and challenging projects for high-end retail stores including Prada, Gucci, Fendi, Chanel and Apple.
